October 12th

The King George Hotel was chosen mainly because it was relatively cheap and within walking distance of the conference. It was OK, but the bedroom was small and there was a lot of street noise, as there was no air-conditioning so we left the window open at night. First impressions of SF were that it was a bit of a mix, part normal US city, partly almost Caribbean with its dry dusty hills, part European with its old buildings and metal fire escapes. The famous cable cars were crowded, with long line ups to get on, and people hanging off them, like Indian trains! The whole city was quite busy and bustling with activity.
