KING OYSTON?

I had long ago been told that Oyston was the name of a King of Norway, and that Oyston was a common name there, but I was unable to find any Oystons in the Oslo or Bergen phone books.

It turns out that Oystein is a Norwegian first name, for example there is a Norwegian composer called Oystein Sevag.

There was a King Oystein of Norway from 1103 to 1122, called Oystein Magnusson. He ruled for his brother, Jerusalemfarrer Magnusson, who was away at the Crusades. He was, apparently, a good King, who founded several towns including Kabelvag in the Lofoten Island group of Northern Norway.

Oystons: convicts, artists, and the 55th richest man in the North of England

I recently got two bits of e-mail: Jules Cohen (creative@globaluser.com) wrote to say:
I have in my possession some very good and rather old watercolour paintings, by an artist called Oyston (George or Gregor - the first name is not quite clear). It would be appreciated if you could let me know whether you have any information about the painter in question.

If you know anything, please let Jules and me know.

Update. February 25th, 2000:
EBay is auctioning a painting by George Oyston. The seller wrote:

The bidding was up to $270 US when I gave up ..

Chris Oyston (oystons.lease@bigpond.com) wrote to say :
I am a fifth generation Australian, descendant of one John Oyston sent to Australia as a convict. More about that later. I am interested in finding routes in the UK for John and any surviving relatives anywhere.
Again, any info let Chris and me know. Chris promises more details later...

Finally, a friend at work showed me an article about Owen Oyston, the 55th richest man in the North of England.
