Nerve Conduction

The Cleveland Clinic Foundation has a good description of Basic Nerve Physiology which is aimed at anaesthetists. It includes a detailed discussion about the mechanism of action of local anaesthetics.

Local Anaesthetics

I have established an Internet discussion list about local anaesthetics and regional anaesthesia. To subscribe, send "subscribe lara-l (yourname)" as the text of a message with no subject and no signature, to LISTSERV@GROUCHO.MED.YALE.EDU. Further information about this list is available on the Web.

World Anaesthesia and the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists have published an excellent article on "The Pharmacology of Local Anaesthetic Agents" as part of "Update in Anaesthesia", a journal for anaesthetists in developing countries.

Allan Palmer has set up a slide show on Local Anaesthetics. It includes some very clear images but can be slow to download.

The Cleveland Clinic Foundation Department of Anaesthesia site includes a useful section on the Pharmacology of Local Anaesthetics, with sections on their properties , toxicity, and on specific ester and amide anaesthetics. The site also includes advice on choosing a local anaesthetic based on the experience of their orthopaedic anaesthetists.

Gasbone includes a brief description of local anaesthetic drugs.

Specific Drugs

Astra Pharma Inc has a home page, but it does not contain clinical information.

The Virtual Textbook of Anaesthesia includes a related chapter on "Local and Regional Anaesthetic Techniques".
