Course Objectives

Anaesthetic Practice '98 provides participants with the opportunity to update and expand their knowledge base and skills in many different areas.

Registrants will learn about the acute resuscitation of newborns, the latest theories on the cellular mechanisms of anaesthetic agents, and problems with positioning patients while under anaesthesia. Controversial areas such as the risks of specific techniques in spinal anaesthesia, the old problem of nausea after anaesthesia will be revisited.

Half day programs have been dedicated to perioperative cardiovascular issues as well as current controversies in obstetrical anaesthesia. The goal of the first is to familiarize the registrants with new therapies for cardiac disease as well as preoperative cardiac risk assessment in high risk patients.

A second half day session will expose attendees to new obstetrical anaesthetic techniques and how they can be applied in a non-academic practice in addition to exploring contentious issues in the obstetrical anaesthesia.

The Mendelson lecture will update registrants on the latest suggested management of one of the most important areas in anaesthesia - the difficult airway.

A hands on workshop will allow some attendees to become familiar with fibreoptic techniques of airway management.

Finally, small group sessions presented in a Problem-Based-Learning format with case discussions will allow insight on the management of common problems encountered in trauma anaesthesia, the acute pain service and regional anaesthesia.
